By default the phone makes the same sound when you get new email that it does when you get a new text. For me though I want to know which it is without having to look at the screen, and fortunately you can configure this.

To change the sound that is played when a new text message arrives, open up the Messaging app, press the menu key, and then the Setings button. The notification settings can be found by scrolling right down to the bottom of that screen. You can change the ringtone and also set whether or not the phone should vibrate.

Changing your email ringtone is very similar. In fact if you have multiple email accounts, you can set a different ringtone for each of your accounts. Open up the email program, and if necessary select the account you wish to change. Press Menu, then Account Settings and you have the same notification settings as for messaging.
