Surely changing your phone's wallpaper is the simplest thing you can do to get a look that's more your thing. The Android desktop on the Magic has three 'workspaces' by default, and when panning from one to the next, the wallpaper pans at a slower rate than any icons that are visible, creating a real 3-D foreground/background effect. A good wallpaper for the HTC Magic would take both these factors into account.

The screen resolution of the Magic is 320 pixels wide by 480 pixels high, so we're looking for background images that are twice this width, i.e. 640 px by 480px. A small selection of wallpapers for the HTC Magic follow below.
